Does a home EV charger need maintenance?
1 min read · Updated 15 October 2026
The short answer
A little. A yearly safety check of the earthing, RCD, cable and connector, and keeping the firmware up to date, is enough for most chargers.
What you can do
Keep the connector clean and dry, coil the cable loosely and check it for damage.
What an engineer checks
Earthing, RCD operation, terminations and the condition of the cable and socket.
Firmware
Updates fix bugs and keep smart features working. Most chargers update themselves if they stay online.
Want someone else to look after it?
Annual service, monitoring and repairs, any make.
