Home EV charger not working: what to check before calling someone
1 min read · Updated 15 October 2026
The short answer
Check the car's own charging schedule and the charger's app first, then the RCD and breaker in your consumer unit. If it's still dead, it's likely a board, contactor or connector fault.
1. The car
Many cars have their own charging schedule or charge limit. It may be waiting rather than broken.
2. The app and Wi-Fi
Smart chargers can stop if they lose connection or a scheduled tariff window changes.
3. The consumer unit
Check whether the charger's breaker or RCD has tripped. If it trips again straight away, stop and call an electrician.
4. The cable
Look for damage to the cable or connector. Don't use it if it's damaged.
