Does home insurance cover solar panels?

1 min read · Updated 15 October 2026

The short answer

Often, but only as part of the building and only for events like storm, fire or theft. Breakdowns, wear and inverter failure are usually not covered.

Tell your insurer

Panels add value to the building, so most insurers want to know about them. If you haven't told yours, a claim could be reduced or refused.

What's usually covered

Damage from insured events: a storm lifting a panel, a fire, theft of equipment.

What usually isn't

The inverter failing with age, a faulty optimiser, loose connections or a drop in output. These are the faults that actually happen most.

On cover: Solar panel insurance: what does it cover, and do you need it?

Want someone else to look after it?

Annual service, monitoring and repairs, any make.
