Do solar panels need maintenance?

1 min read · Updated 15 October 2026

The short answer

Very little, but not none. The panels mostly look after themselves; the inverter, connections and isolators are where problems start.

Watch your generation

Compare this month's output with the same month last year. A sustained drop usually means a fault, not the weather.

Check the inverter

Look at its display or app every so often. A warning light or a missing reading is worth investigating.

A periodic inspection

An electrical check of connections, isolators and cabling catches the loose or corroded connector before it becomes a fault.

On cover: Solar panel insurance: what does it cover, and do you need it?

Want someone else to look after it?

Annual service, monitoring and repairs, any make.
