How long does a solar inverter last, and what does replacing it cost?

1 min read · Updated 15 October 2026

The short answer

Most string inverters last 10 to 15 years, well short of the panels. Replacement typically costs £500 to £1,500 fitted, depending on size and type.

Signs it's failing

Error codes, no display, a fan running hard, or generation dropping to zero on a sunny day.

Repair or replace

Older inverters are rarely worth repairing. A replacement may also be a chance to add battery compatibility.

Planning for it

Inverter failure is the most common solar fault, and it tends to land between years 5 and 12.
