Heat pump maintenance: what you can do yourself and what needs an engineer

1 min read · Updated 15 October 2026

The short answer

You can keep the outdoor unit clear and watch your settings and pressure. Anything inside the unit, the refrigerant circuit or the electrics needs a qualified engineer.

What you can do

Keep leaves, snow and plants away from the outdoor unit. Check the system pressure on the gauge. Note any error codes. Leave the settings your installer chose unless you know why you're changing them.

What needs an engineer

Refrigerant checks (which need F-gas certification), electrical work, cleaning strainers on the water circuit, and changes to flow temperatures or weather compensation.

What to keep a record of

Your installation certificate, commissioning sheet and service history. You'll need them for warranty claims and when you sell the house.

Want someone else to look after it?

Annual service, monitoring and repairs, any make.
