How often does an air source heat pump need servicing?

1 min read · Updated 15 October 2026

The short answer

Once a year. Most manufacturers ask for an annual service by a qualified engineer to keep the warranty valid, and it's the simplest way to keep the heat pump running efficiently.

Why yearly

Heat pumps don't burn anything, so they don't wear like a boiler, but efficiency drifts. Flow temperatures creep up, strainers clog and controls get changed. A yearly check puts it back where it should be.

When to book

Late summer or early autumn, before the heating season. Engineers are busiest from November to March, which is also when most faults show up.

Signs it needs a look sooner

Higher bills for the same comfort, rooms taking longer to warm up, new noises from the outdoor unit, or an error code on the controller.

Annual service, monitoring and repairs, any make.
